Aldi is set to give more than 28,000 hourly paid store colleagues a slightly bigger-than-expected pay rise from 1 September 2025.

In July, the retailer said pay for store assistants would increase from £12.75 an hour to £13.00 from September. That has been lifted slightly further to £13.02, rising to £13.95 with length of service.

In London, hourly rates will increase from £14.05 to £14.35, reaching £14.66 for longer-serving staff. Aldi said it upped its pay to maintains its position as a high-paying supermarket employer.

This is the second pay increase for store staff in 2025, which the employer said underlines its ongoing commitment to competitive rates. The company also offers paid breaks, which it estimates are worth around £1,425 a year for the average colleague.

Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland, said: “Our colleagues are at the heart of our success, and we’re committed to ensuring they are fully rewarded for the outstanding work they do. Our higher than planned pay rise is part of our promise to never be beaten on pay.”

The latest uplift is part of a wider supermarket pay race, with Lidl recently increasing pay for staff, as the sector continues to grapple with recruitment and retention in a competitive labour market.
